MSPs flout no smoking guide

Members of the Scottish Parliament have given the go-ahead for a £20,000 shelter at Holyrood that will allow them to continue to light-up at work - in breach of their own guidelines. Despite warning councils, health boards and care providers that building shelters to allow people to smoke outside would “minimise the health benefits of going smoke-free”, the Scottish Parliament has approved one for MSPs. Critics accused politicians of “breathtaking hypocrisy” for failing to follow the rules they have set for others.

I read the report in the Sunday Times with total amazement. One law for them and one for us. Isn't it about time we stood up and were counted? Why is it that we are going to be banned from smoking in public places in Scotland from March and yet members of parliment can have a special place built at our expense for them to have a smoke?

Why can't we have a choice? Yes, I agree we shouldn't smoke in restaurants where people are eating, but surely they could have pub for smokers and pubs for non-smokers. What about freedom of choice?

The MSPs are total hypocrites, and it's about time we started to put up a fight. Why should we let them walk all over us? Bet the non-smokers wouldn't like it if their taxes go up, and if we all stop smoking where will the taxes come from?

Its not just MSPs, I read somewhere that there are several Bars and areas inside the House of commons that are, and will remain, exempt from any smoking ban that may be imposed.
It's easy to impose restrictons on others if you don't feel the bite yourself.

I just hope none of these MPS are overweight, not that I actually have a problem with obese people at all be, I have very good friends who some may class as obese. Just those anti - smokers who are not willing to compromise and are fighting for an outright ban. When the restaurants start putting scales inside the doors and you get turned away because you offend shallow minded people, because you are overweight. Maybe you will get an idea how some of us smokers feel.
