Scottish ban could extend to great outdoors

Scotland is to have some of the world’s most draconian anti-smoking laws after ministers agreed measures to extend the proposed ban outdoors, to public parks, play areas and outside school gates. Guidelines, published jointly by Andy Kerr, the health minister, and Cosla, will advise councils to apply the ban to any area where children are likely to gather. Local authorities which follow the guidelines will have the power to introduce bylaws to enforce them. People caught smoking in parks or outside school gates would risk a fine.

Sorry if I'm missing something here but where is it stated that parks are facilities provided solely for the benefit of children?

I pay my taxes (as a single, no family, higher rate earner who also happens to smoke, I probably pay more tax than most but that's a whole other debate), I live in Scotland, can I get an "adults only" park please?....actually, I'd probably go to the park alot more often if it was for all those screaming, snotty, small people running around and disturbing my relaxing walk!

I can't help but feel that the next logical step is to have smokers chased around the parks by maniacs with birch rods.

Strange how the Scottish people were never given an opportunity to vote on the smoking ban, as it was sneaked through as a "health & safety issue". It was never part of any manifesto.

Now they can also arbitarily impose further restrictions in outdoor locations.

I hope that when the next Scottish Parliamentary elections are due, Jack "Boot" McConnell is dismissed along with his cronies.

It will interest you to know that the last attempt at banning smoking was during the late 1930s and a regime led by Adolf Hitler.

I too have written to my local MP, Andrew Arbuckle, and to Sir Menzies Campbell. I was so angry with the report in the Sunday Times regarding MSP building their own smoking room (8 January), yet we the mere mortals who pay their wages and pay for their new smoking room are not allowed.

Where is the justice in that - one law for them and one for us. It's not right and we must all stand up and be counted. I haven't had a reply from the MPs. It will be interesting what they come up with.

Well I have a few holidays with my friends throughout the year. These Countries do not want our custom. Scotland, Ireland, USA, Uk where we live, I would not dream of having a holiday here anyway (not since the ciggies went up to stupid prices) but my friends and I have spent thousand in other nice countries and very rarely have to pay the prices here for my cigarettes. We would rather go where we are welcome, sun, fun, booze, and cigs, what more could you want from a holiday.
