Fag ban "will be a boon to bars"

Pub bosses could see a boom in trade when a smoking ban is introduced next year. Takings are expected to increase as families and non-smokers who have shunned pubs because of health fears flock back. Many landlords opposed a total smoking ban, believing trade would suffer as smokers stayed at home to enjoy a cigarette with their favourite tipple rather than drink in a smoke-free pub. But according to Elsa Goddard, manager of the smoke-free Raby Arms, in Hartlepool, pubs will see an increase in trade. Elsa, who has worked in the licensing industry for 15 years, said: "A lot of non-smokers and families who would have stayed away from pubs now come here, and that is a direct result of the change.

Fag ban will be a boon to bars? Go tell that to the Irish publicans. A recent detailed survey of the Irish hospitality industry conducted by Insight Research found that 67% of pubs lost trade, with 2/3rds of these reporting significant losses due to the smoking ban. The only pubs who have bucked this trend are the one's who've created outdoor smoking areas, such as heated patios.

That is Absolute CRAP...
Families are hardly going to generate the same revenue as the current smokers that go out on the piss every night, even with a smoking ban... Pubs and Clubs everywhere are bound to lose money based on the ban - as many drinkers smoke, and I doubt even the non smokers want to go out and party in a 'family pub' - that's what Weekends and Beer gardens are for!

Again I see this reference to families and pubs. I have a family and I have never worried about taking them into 'family pubs' however It may just be a point in semantics but these places are restaurants with a bar, NOT a pub.
A 'pub' is a place that children below a certain age are barred from by law. A 'pub' is a place that serves alcohol full stop. They don't cater for anything other than adult entertainment.
The 'restaurant pub' has Charley Chalk, Worzel Gumadge etc. the 'pub' has Hen nights and striper-grams.
Are all these 'families' going to rush back into 'pubs' with naked men & women cavorting for someone's birthday, or drunk and swearing bride to be's. No of course not, these are "horses for courses" establishments we choose the appropriate place to go depending on the criteria with which we set out. This is the 'choice' that we all talk about, the choice to go into a smoking pub or to choose a non-smoking pub or even, if such a place is viable a non-alcoholic pub, this is the choice that this country should have NOT Hobson's choice.

Yours.
Pete.

I totally agree with you Pete J, however looking at the way things are going and the sheer lunacy of most current governmental policies, we could end up with Creches in Pubs, God forbid!

I remember a time when parents would go to the pub and leave the kids outside on the pavement with a glass of lemonade. While I do not condone that behaviour, it looks like we will get the situation where the kids are in the bar and all the adults will be out on the pavement???.
Who'd a thunk it, Laugh, I don't.

Yours.
Pete.
