"Ban motorists smoking"

Two thirds of motorists say they would support a driving and smoking ban, according to survey on the website autotrader.co.uk. Most of the 500 people surveyed said drivers should stub out before taking to the road - with a fifth of smokers agreeing. Nearly as many said that when it comes to choosing a used car they prefer to buy from non-smokers too. A total of 61 per cent said they would prefer to buy a smoke-free car - with a third of smokers admitting they would do likewise. The survey follows news that the Highway Code will carry warnings to motorists regarding smoking and driving for this time in its next edition.

I would guess that Autotrader must have an anti-smoking editor. Otherwise what is the point to this survey? Frankly I don't believe a word of it - and no doubt we will discover in time that is yet another wholly biased and statistically unrepresentative 'survey'

It is no business of Autotrader or anyone else whether I smoke in my own car or not. Equally it is my business whether I listen to my radio or CD player, hum, sing, eat, drink, shout, fart, belch, laugh or cry.

Of course the miserable po-faced ASH busybodies come leaping in with their sanctimonious bleatings - no surprise there!

Honestly, the whole smoking vs non-smoking debate is descending into farce, and is really bringing out the kindergarten tendency!

It seems like it is going to open season for these idiots from now on. Well, 'bring it on' is what I say. Come on, you bastards, just try and stop ME smoking in MY car and see where it gets you! At least, and at last, it will give me the chance of indulging in some serious civil disobedience without causing any offence to my fellow man.

You know, when your enemies are having to resort to such ludicrous and childish tactics, that you're on the winning side.

Shameless publicity seeking at a time when smoking bans are in the news.
I used to laugh at this sort of thing - but now it seems it always gives some faceless backbencher a new way to make a name for themselves.
ASH liked to trumpet on about how partial bans were unenforceable - well how enforceable is this? Can you smoke whilst alone? Can you smoke in a convertable with the roof down? Can you smoke with all windows and sunroof open? an you smoke whilst parked? Can you smoke with the car in your own drive? Can you smoke in a parked motor caravan?

Unenforceable and ridiculous! But that won't stop the antis...

If smoking in cars is to be banned because of the distraction it causes, then when are the government going to ban children in cars - they are the biggest distraction of all. Then, of course, they should ban all conversation and interaction with any passengers, as this too is a distraction; as is sucking a sweet, you might choke on that; listening to the radio/CD, or in fact taking notice of other road users!

Where is this farcical dictatorship going to end.

I have been driving for over 30 years and smoking for all of those. The only accident I have been involved in was one where I was stationary, in a queue of traffic, at a junction with another car behind me - the next car instead of braking hit the accelerator and cannoned the car behind me into me. I did however manage to stop before hitting the car in front of me!

It is no point asking where this idea has come from or where the proof is because the facists and rabid antis will only fabricate information and figures, the same as they already have done with the passive smoking thing. They are getting quite a lot of practice in lying to the public at large, perhaps they should become MP's or councillors as lying seems to be a pre-requisite for these positions.

What grounds are there for such a ban? That's what I want to know, for any legislation to be introduced there has to be a clear danger to other road users/ pedestrians etc. ETS or for that matter having lung cancer itself is not a contributory factor in road safety. Lack of control over the vehicle because of holding/ dragging on a ciggy is the one most often touted by antis, excuse me. But you will not pass your driving test in that case, because you will not be able to operate your lights, indicators, horn, handbrake etc. if you are not able to drive 1 handed. And more to the point without being able to drive 1 handed how will you ever get out of 1st?

Pete.
PS.Will a traffic law of this kind be applied to all road users, as a motorcyclist I have always enjoyed smoking my meerschaum inside my crash helmet :-)

In response to Lyn's post, I too have only had 1 accident whilst riding for over 20 years, when a driver who was in completely the wrong lane when joining a roundabout crossed 2 lanes in order to leave at the next exit forcing me out of my lane and ending up forcing me off the road. Although it has nothing to do with smoking there is an uncomfortable parallel here, the abdication of responsibility.

Government intervention removes responsibility for ones own actions, leading to a society that has to be led by stricter restrictions as we give up more and more of our own responsibilities. As more restrictions (like the smoking ban) are inflicted on us the easier it is for government to introduce more and greater interventions upon us.

I mentioned the above incident because the driver in questions excuse for nearly killing me was, "I was told by someone that that was the right lane to be in for that exit". Couldn't even make up her own mind on how to drive and removed the blame to an unnamed 3rd party. So that was all right then, you were told by someone....

Yours.
Pete.
